Description:

University physicists Leonard and Sheldon know whether to use an integral or a differential to solve the area under a curve. But they don’t have a clue about girls. Or dating. Or clothes. Or parties. Or having fun. Or, basically, life. So when a pretty blonde named Penny moves in the apartment across the hall, the guys decide to get an education outside of the classroom. Boys, you have a lot to learn. With series creators Chuck Lorre (Two and a Half Men) and Bill Prady (The Gilmore Girls) concocting the right mix of logic and lunacy and stars Johnny Galecki (Roseanne) and Jim Parsons (Judging Amy) turning geekdom into Phi Beta fun, The Big Bang Theory is big on laughs. And life.

5Laugh Out Loud Funny !Sep 08, 2010
I bought this initially for myself, but decided to get a copy for my father as well, since we both think this show is absolutely hysterical. I can't get enough of the BBT ! Oh, in case you're wondering... I also ordered the 2nd season and have the 3rd season on order for both me and my dad (it's now a Christmas gift he looks forward to). Great show and a superb cast - so funny !!!

5A fresh, wonderful seriesSep 04, 2010
THE SHOW ITSELF:
The show is great. You have one super genius by the name of Sheldon who's mal-adjusted socially which creates friction and humorous situations with his roommate Leonard and anyone else he talks to. Leonard is also socially awkward and inept in certain situations, but he fares much better off then Sheldon. Rajesh is astro-physicist who simply cannot talk to girls directly, by some pathological "defect" in his mind. Howard on the other hand is the engineer who could be considered a social opposite of Rajesh. He hits on women more than he should, and what's considered a disgusting manner to some of the ladies he meets does create humorous situations for the audience. Rajesh being Indian and Howard being Jewish also creates extra material as well. They're on the level, and the writers didn't overdo those types of jokes. The last of the major characters is Penny, the new apartment neighbor. She's nowhere near the same book smarts as the other four, but her being better socially adjusted and how conversations go with the other 4 characters is another source of entertainment.

As one would expect from the nature of the show, there is much in the way of references to geek pop culture as well. Sci-fi flicks such as Star Trek, Star Wars, The Time Machine, Planet Of The Apes, and Lord of the Rings; and comics such as Superman and the Flash are among some of them. Those are rounded out by actual references to science (Schrodinger's cat, Oppenheimer Theory, etc. )

In short, Sheldon's character is terrific, but everyone else also does their part in creating an hilarious TV show that's both entertaining and believable.

THE DVD ITSELF:
You get all 17 episodes of season 1. Oddly enough, the only spoken language available is English. Usually, French and Spanish are options, but I suppose it would've been too difficult to translate the 'geek speak' into those languages? What's also odd is there are also Asian languages available as part of the 7 different languages for closed captions. English, French, Spanish, Portugese, Chinese, Korean, and Thai.

There's also a special feature in where the show's creators talk about the details of putting the show into production. Some of it includes the original version of how the show was going to be and comments about the actual physicist they have on-call for all of the scientific references and its accuracy. Every one of the 5 main cast members also speak briefly about the characters they play. You also learn about what other shows/work the actors did previously, what they like about being in The Big Bang Theory, and how some of these characters relate to people known in real life (e.g. there's someone like Rajesh with that type of speech pathology!).

The box comes with an insert that lists all of the episodes as well as a brief description. There really isn't that much else in ways of material things or extra features, but at least the show is good, and they're all priced accordingly, compared to other TV series DVD box sets which are much more expensive, but some of them do feature more bonus material/episodes.

1Used DVD set a Big Bust, not a Big BangAug 07, 2010
My husband and I love the Big Bang Theory, but we never saw the first season, so I decided to buy it. This was my first try at buying a used DVD- my husband said "They are not subject to wear in use, so it should be fine."
The First Season set is three discs- the first two discs would show us most of the first episodes, then freeze or jump back to the menu. We only saw one or two episodes to the end. The third disc would not "Load" properly and displayed only error messages. Disc 1 had some visible marks, so we tried to clean it, but it did not help.
Through Amazon, I sent an e-mail to the seller "The Hills" on July 28, explaining the problems and asking for a refund. That was 10 days ago, with no reply from the seller.
I am upset with the seller and will probably never buy used DVD's again.

2Appeared to be bootleggedJul 16, 2010
The disc that was received played well and came in a timely fashion, but looked to be burnt and the cover appeared to be a home print job. Possibly bootlegged, but item was listed as original disc.
